Community projects in Australia

Published:
16 August 2019
We put our people – and the communities they’re a part of – first. We might be a big business but we pay attention to the important things – and that starts with you. We don’t just create values for a corporate handbook; we stick and live by them at all levels and parts of the business. At BP Australia, these principles will shape your experiences every day

Oz Harvest partnership

BP is proud to be a major sponsor of OzHarvest - Australia’s first perishable food-rescue organisation that aims to reduce food waste and help deliver more meals to people in need across Australia. As part of our unique five-year partnership, we’re committing up to $1-million annually to support OzHarvest food rescue operations across the country. Our support ranges from donating 400,000 litres of BP Ultimate fuel for OZ Harvest’s fleet of yellow vans and support for community education programmes. We’re also supplying quality surplus food from more than 80 of our BP operated retail sites across Australia to the people that need it most.

McGrath Foundation partnership

For the last four years we've been a loyal partner and supporter of the McGrath Foundation. The McGrath Foundation is one of Australia’s leading breast cancer support and education charities. The foundation raises money to fund McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities right across Australia and to increase breast awareness in young women through its innovative “Curve Lurve” Program.

Our goal is to fund a new McGrath Breast Care Nurse every year. These nurses offer vital emotional support and friendship to the patient and their families during extremely difficult times which can greatly minimise the stress and trauma of a breast cancer diagnosis.

To achieve this, we're donating a portion of all fuel sales during the first week of October, and will be encouraging our customers to donate to the foundation at the register. Between 2013 and 2016, more than $1-million has been raised for the McGrath Foundation by BP and our customers.

Native ARC

BP supports local communities through a number of environmental programmes across Australia that cover conservation, monitoring threatened fauna species and wildlife rehabilitation, including Native ARC and coast care in Western Australia. We’ve been actively involved with Native ARC since 2010 and have committed to spending $30,000 annually between 2016 and 2018. This funding will go towards ongoing upgrades and the construction of a variety of wildlife enclosures for turtles, joeys, marsupials and birds of prey.

Early education

BP formed a partnership Adelaide-based STEM Sista’s in 2016. STEM Sista's lead a personal development program for girls in years nine to 12, which helps students to achieve their goals in STEM related careers. Both individually and with leading energy company Statoil, BP has awarded education grants, valued at between $5,000 and $10,000, to secondary schools with activities focused on STEM areas of study, from robotics engineering to sustainable trout farming. Through intensive mentoring and access to companies such as BP, the students gained first-hand experience of the STEM industry and a potential career.
