Our supply and trading business is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of products that keep the whole world moving

In this age of environmental change, technological evolution and global expansion, we’re having to think about altering the way we work. For BP to continue leading the way to a lower carbon future, we’re having to adopt new ideas. Operate in a way that will mean we can keep up with rising demands – both now and in the future.

They’re finding patterns in large data sets to guide the way we move, sell and trade our products

It’s an exciting time of change that will touch every part of our business. One that our trading analytics team is helping to shape. Bringing together the world-class expertise of market analysts, structuring specialists, quantitative analysts, data strategists and core strategists, our trading analytics network currently spans four main trading hubs globally. Home to around 150 analysts, this team of highly-skilled experts uses a cross-disciplinary analytical approach that brings fresh perspectives to the most challenging commercial problems – and delivers cutting-edge solutions that impact us all. This is where innovation shapes the future of energy and commodities trading – and influences our ability to keep the world advancing.

For proof of this influence, you need to look no further than our data strategists team – a specialism that has grown rapidly in each of our main hubs.

“Data science is the current buzz word,” data strategist Sarabjeet explains. “You see all organisations across the spectrum trying to build up their teams in this space.

"Here at BP, the analytics team is valued a lot. It’s one of the market leaders when it comes to commodities and our team is an important revenue generator.” That predominantly comes from working with our trading desks, exploring new ideas and delivering the tools our commercial teams need to succeed in any given market.

But on a broader level, these specialists also have the chance to make a vital contribution to BP’s tech revolution.

These data strategists are highly educated, curious, numerically-minded employees, often from financial and tech-based backgrounds. And with the help of advanced statistical methods, machine learning and artificial intelligence, they’re finding patterns in large data sets to guide the way we move, sell and trade our products.

In the fast-paced environment of the trading floor, that means encountering new challenges every day – and having the space to explore innovative ways to overcome them.

“The best part is the close interaction with traders,” data strategist Avranil explains.

“They’ll provide the issue, then we’re open to find a solution and work with them to develop it. We’re always free to try new things and make new suggestions. Then share what we learn across the whole global team.”

For the most restless and ambitious of problemsolvers, BP provides a broad range of projects to continuously test, energize and extend their thinking.

“In data science there’s always more problems to explore, more questions to try and solve,” says data strategist Patrick. “At BP, we get access to data and knowledge you don’t get elsewhere.” But perhaps one of the most interesting parts of the data strategists team here is the dynamic you’ll find among team members, as Patrick adds.

“I like the kind of start-up vibe where it’s encouraged to explore your own ideas. I wouldn’t want to have a top-down approach where people from above tell you exactly what you are supposed to do and how you’re supposed to do it.”

Co-operative and supportive, this is a place where ideas come to life.
